Russian dance Barynya

Russian dances seem to be old as the world. There is a great number of Russian folk dances, that differ from one region to another. One of the most popular Russian dances is barynya. The word ''barynya''is translated from Russian as ''landlady'', was used as an addressing for to a higher class woman by simple folk.

Barynya dance can be defined as a fast one and combines chastushka songs with frenetic dancing. This kind of Russian dancing usually has no special choreography, dancers perform as a rule sprited stomping and traditional Russian squatting. The refrain “Barynya, barynya, sudarynya-barynya” (landlady, landlady, madam-landlady), is also typically repeated throughout the course of the dance. The Barynya chastuskas (short folk poems with humor) have the refrain: "Barynya, barynya, sudarynya-barynya", ("Барыня, барыня, сударыня-барыня" in Russian).
